GRAND CANYON BOOKS with Mr. Dan  – (Go to how to make layered books for instructions on making this book format).

In Mr. Dan’s class, an appreciation of nature, nature conservation and science is highly present – it is visible from the choices in children’s literature displayed around the classroom, as well as an observation table with an on-going exhibit of natural items to study: bird nests, plants, seeds, and geological rocks.

Each year Mr. Dan’s 3rd/4th grade class rafts down the Colorado River or camps at the rim of the canyon. During these trips, lessons in geology are at the forefront of his learning objectives. Imagine the depth of learning and the tangible understanding that his students have from this multi-sensory field trip!

Mr. Dan used the layered book format to recreate the layers of the Grand Canyon. Choosing paper that is reminiscent of the colors in the canyon, he taught his students an acronym to help them remember the geological layers of the canyon- Know the Canyon’s History – Study Rocks Made By Time – The tabs of the layered book display the acronym. When the flaps are lifted, the name of the geological layers and descriptions are underneath.

Know – Kaibab Limestone
The – Toroweap Formation
Canyon’s – Coconino Sandstone
History – Hermit Shale
Study – Supai Group
Rocks – Redwall Limestone
Made – Muav Limestone
By – Bright Angel Shale
Time – Tapeats Sandstone

A great addition to all units of study are the stories that add to the backdrop of learning. During this unit, Mr. Dan shares these two books with his class:

1- Down the Colorado: John Wesley Powell, the One-Armed Explorer by Deborah Kogan Ray;

2- The Last River: John Wesley Powell and the Colorado River Exploring Expedition by Stuart Waldman.
