Book Club – Mustache Baby by Bridget Heos

Mustache Baby by Bridget Heos, illustrated by Joy Ang, is a humorous story about a baby born with a mustache and his adventures in imaginary play that include dabbling in good and evil.

Let me tell you why Mustache Baby is our first featured book for the “Lemonade Book Club!” My son’s class took a trip to the local library. When I picked him up from school, he went into great detail about the book the librarian read called, Mustache Baby! I normally have to ask all kinds of questions to get ANY information out of my son about his day, but with this particular literary inspiration, no prompting was necessary on this day. Any book that can get my son to share his thoughts is a great book to me. With my son so excited, I had to check out this book. And now I understand what all the chatter is about, it IS a really fun and creative story with hilarious illustrations that help tell the story.

Book Club Activity – Dramatic Play

To officially kick off the Lemonade Book Club, we celebrated with a refreshing glass of lemonade and then mustaches! Because Mustache Baby displays a wonderful array of personalities in the book, I laid out costumes for the kids to act out parts of the book and also to create their own characters.

Dramatic Play has a very important role in child development. In what appears to simply be a game of “make-believe,” children are learning and developing many essential skills. Allowing children the time to act out stories assist children in developing communication, language, and story comprehension. Dramatic play inspires creative and imaginative play, abstract thinking, and social skills.

As you read Mustache Baby, be sure to have the children take note of the illustrations. The illustrations in this book tell a lot of the story.

  • Did Mustache Baby really go to jail? Where did he go?
  • Did everyone really love having Officer Billy around?
  • How can you tell?
  • After reading Mustache Baby and playing dress-up, were the kids repeating lines (developing language)? Were they creating new scenarios for the book (imagination)?
